According to the chronicles Mahavamsa, Chulavamsa the Gokanna Vihara was built by the King Mahasen〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=satmag01 )〕 in the 3rd century (275-301 AD).〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Funday Times )〕 In the 16th century it was destroyed by the Portuguese〔Ancient Ceylon-The journal of the Archeological Dept〕 to construct the fort.
